Mark Ryden

Mark Ryden

Mark Ryden is an American painter known for his unique style that blends pop culture imagery with classical painting techniques, often described as "Pop Surrealism" or "Lowbrow" art. Born in Medford, Oregon, in 1963, he was raised in Southern California and received his BFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 1987. Ryden's work features nostalgic, often unsettling imagery, drawing inspiration from sources like Little Golden Books, old toys, anatomical models, and religious ephemera.

Ryden's career took off in the 1990s, during which time he worked as a commercial artist, designing album covers for artists like Michael Jackson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Aerosmith. His first solo show, "The Meat Show," in 1998, garnered significant attention. He has since exhibited in major galleries and museums worldwide, including retrospectives like "Wondertoonel" at the Frye Art Museum and the Pasadena Museum of California Art. He is known for his meticulous technique, using glazes and ornate frames to create a sense of depth and captivating his viewers.
